We recently spoke with Sam Stevens, Minnesota School of Business-Blaine (MSB) paralegal program graduate, about her education and current position at Brooks, Cameron and Huebsch, PLLC. Sam gives some great advice to prospective college students.

Why did you choose to go to school at MSB?

I chose MSB because of the small class sizes and the ability to take day, night and online classes. I transferred from Anoka Ramsey Community College after taking general education courses. I decided to transfer to MSB for the paralegal program.

Why did you pick the paralegal program?

I was and still am interested in the law. I thought that I had the natural qualities that paralegals have, such as organizational and planning skills.

Tell us about your current position.

I work as a patent prosecution paralegal at Brooks, Cameron and Huebsch, PLLC. I file U.S. patent applications and guide the applications through the process of being patented. I fill out forms, file and revise documents, checking for errors before filing, email clients and type reports. I also help clients with scientific inventions.

What is the best part of your job?

Flexibility and the people I work with. I like that I am learning valuable skills.

How did you get your job?

An employee at the firm called Kofi Montzka, paralegal program chair at MSB-Blaine, looking for a qualified paralegal and I was referred for the position. I went through two interviews before accepting the job.

What is the best advice you have for prospective students to be successful in school and in finding a job?

Get involved as much as possible; join clubs and participate in events involving your future career path. I wish I would have done more while in school. I was so busy with work and school. Now that I am working in the field, I realize the importance of professional networking. You should get out there and network in your field even if you’re really busy.
